when i was a little girl
i remember telling mum
"when i grow up i am going to marry my dad."
i remember on the weekends when you would make our breakfast
and the cups of tea were white and sweet
and the toast was buttery and thick.
i remember the secret language you taught us
it used to drive mum crazy
and how to catch fishes
i remember sitting on the bathroom vanity watching you shave
and you would put shaving cream on my face and i would pretend to shave too.
i remember when mum was overseas and we thought it was a good idea
to take it in turns to cook
i almost killed us with creamy pasta
but you never complained.
i remember calling you from the valley at some crazy time in the morning
and you came and got me.
held my hair the night i drank too much
gave the bullies at school the fright of there lives
sat through endless haircuts while i was training to be a hairdresser
the only dad to do so
and hold 36 show bags while my brother and sister and i
rode every ride at the ekka.
i remember every thing you and mum did for us dad
of course it wasn't always easy.
nothing ever is.
but i wouldn't change a thing.
you have lived such an amazing life and you were always an inspiration
to me.
so i dedicate this to you dad.
i can't take you for breakfast this year(that you had to pay for because my card wouldn't work!)
but i will be thinking of you all day.
happy fathers day dad.
i love you very much.
