The first time I came here they were closing...I asked about Dinners...They kinda looked alittle vague, shrugged and replied."mmm, maybe when it gets warmer."I couldn't help but feel like I had walked into someones kitchen..and I was intruding. The atmosphere was so cosy. And the staff not out to make an impression.Just telling it like it is.
The second time I was on my lunch break.Galaxy is a hop step from work and is located on East Terrace.I ordered a decaf flat white. Not by choice, but its a compromise to no coffee at all(.Clearly I'm still alittle jaded about the 'decaf")so when the cool young thing behind the coffee machine said...decaf? how do I do that..? I thought about replying with a' forget it' and moving on...
Clearly I'm not cool enough..but the homemade spinach mushroom and feta tart sitting on the bench had me salivating and I chose to stay..and join the 'in crowd'..
Did I mention the place was packed. And again, the staff had there own conversation going on.Playing tunes, talking about such and such's sleeping arrangements, blah blah blah and again I felt like I was in someones home kitchen....
And I was.It was good old fashion homemade goodness.
Devine.Cheap and super yummy.
So.After a big morning at the record fair,I took Johnboy along for Lunch.
Round three.
Three boys.Clearly getting smashed. This place is so tight for room. After hustling tables we found a cosy table for two near the window and settled in.
The bench was piled high with Goodness
The boys explained they were short staffed. We were happy to wait.
Upstairs was another level of seating. Also packed.Home cooked meals.Fresh Juices.Fresh brewed Chai.Wine and cold beers.
John ordered the Tart and a corona and I ordered the Tofu and seaweed patty and a juice.
Both came with a mix of fantastic salads, taste sensation, and the wait wasn't so long....
The chef for the day was clearly either...a.backing up after a huge night
b.forgot his prescription glasses
c.just plain cool.
Because he keep his sunglasses on the whole time.serving wine, running food, greeting people. And he was totally comfortable with it and pulled it of.
Nothing Fancy here other than great food.
Seaweed patty with a Quinoa salad and a ginger dressed beetroot.
Spinach tart..
Conclusion.
Well, whatever they are doing...it works.
There are no false pretences here.
They don't mind if you listen to there conversation.
Nor do the stress if they are washing glasses as they go,or that the designated chef for the day discovered that the baking paper worked a treat with the potatoes."not soggy".
And they certainly didn't take it out on us.They were very accommodating, polite and hard working gentlemen.
And we felt right at home.in there home.like we would treat you, in our home.
And when I spoke to a lady i know about it,her reply was....
"Its an interesting place. The food is fantastic, maybe to cheap, and the staff don't really care to much about the customer, but its comfortably uncaring and the atmosphere is cosy, verging on alittle to cool, but everyone is themselves...mmm.i really like it,there's something about it.I keep going back."
I agree.Couldn't have said it better myself. Can't wait till it gets warmer.
