i used to watch you and all your girlfriends
sitting around our kitchen table
laughing telling stories drinking tea
and i remember thinking
"i can't wait till i grow up to be just like you"
i remember your laugh
it would echo through the house
and my sister and i would look at each other
and laugh to
i remember Christmas presents
my first crochet bikini, the bucks fizz tape and the sweet valley high books
i remember you dressing my sister and i in matching outfits
with spots and strips and socks to match
and i won my first dancing competition and you were screaming
i remember watching prisoner with you
we were to young but you would let us stay up
and i remember how well you and dad could through a party
and we would watch the adults dance all night
from the top of the stairs
i remember your susie wong shoes
your coconut oil sun baking sessions
the way you would stand on one leg on the phone
with you other one tucked up like a stork
we would imitate you
i remember the smell of clean school uniforms
lettuce and tomato sandwiches when i was sick
and so many other wonderful things.
mum.
and i have missed your birthday again.
and i wasn't be there to bring you lilies and cook you dinner
but i thought of you all day.
happy birthday mum.
i love you very much.x
